Growing up

The perceptions we have as a child of being an adult has its variances…for instance, you thought that when the time comes, your knight in shining armour would gallop on his white horse to sweep you off your feet…then you’d be head over heels in love with this gorgeous hunk and together, you’d ride into the sunset.

Now of course, ceteris paribas, there was supposed to be no defect in his genes…he would be handsome, no body odour problem, not overweight…And there’s no mention of what was his career path like. There’s hardly the need to appreciate a boyfriend who would help you configure your D-Link router or even purchase a DVD decoder software so that you can play DVD movies on your desktop or laptop.

Alas, you encountered many types of men, some who are not your typical cup of tea, some who likes frangipanis and also tea parties, some who are not meant to be on Earth since they think they are replicates of Adonis, some who are out to break your heart into one thousand pieces and some who likes a committment free relationship. Where have all the cowboys gone, Paula Cole once asked…

Fairy tales never depicted the evil mother-in-laws or the outlaws, there were only evil stepmothers and stepsisters…Love is all around with no infidelity to spare as the phantom menace lurking to create chaos to your relationship. Men were gentlemen, women were ladies.

Today, nice in-laws who remain in the bounds of the law and not outside (hence outlaws) are thought to be urban legends…often, we hear of beautiful relationships blooming only to be thwarted by the monster who decided to read its ugly head.

Or the ideal dream that you’d never run out of nice things to don for the girls’ night out or your first date…that you’d never be a fashion victim or faux passé…And you’d have the perfect career donning your power suit and climbing the corporate ladder in your stilettos that will make Miranda Priestly green with envy. There was no such thing as working overtime until day became night, night became day…and all that you will ever see when you finally turn away from your desktop would just be pitch black sky with few or none at all Twinkle Twinkle Stars shining brightly in the sky.

Heck no, you still find yourself rummaging through the pile of 70% off items…you’d not even look at the new arrivals section! But of course, some are fortunate enough to not be able to relate to digging through the clearance bin.

The weather would always be pleasant, bright and sunny…hardly any thunderstorms that will strike your modem to death…and that had you several days without internet connection, unaware that the modem is now blinking at you from Hardware Heaven.

But then your bubbles were burst as your life continues to Que Sera Sera playing in background…Whatever Will Be, Will Be. This song now resonates at our lives and it gets louder and louder when things go wrong. Suddenly when the relationship turns sour, we hear ourselves saying, Whatever Will Be, Will Be. Once upon a time, you dreamt of working in a building on a level many levels above ground level. Years later, when the wish is granted, you find your exhilaration sizzle and die off, like the sizzling tofu on a hotplate.

You ask, is this what growing up is all about? More worries, woes, heartaches….where’s my happy ending, you may be inclined to ask.

Scrutinizing the lyrics of Que Sera Sera, I have pretty much come in terms with my own life, its direction and possibly its ending…Whatever Will Be, Will Be.

When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, what will I be
Will I be pretty, will I be rich
Here’s what she said to me.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

When I was young, I fell in love
I asked my sweetheart what lies ahead
Will we have rainbows, day after day
Here’s what my sweetheart said.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

Now I have children of my own
They ask their mother, what will I be
Will I be handsome, will I be rich
I tell them tenderly.

Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.

You know sometimes the best man is the one who is flawed and has made mistakes. if u meet someone too good or too perfect, most likely they haven’t shown their bad side yet.
